Growth of an international company
A Yorkshire company born and bred, Extract Technology was founded in 1981 in Dewsbury before moving to its current Huddersfield site in 1990. A leading manufacturer and supplier of containment systems for the pharmaceutical, chemical and biotechnology markets, the company has grown significantly and now has a 62-strong workforce.
In 2000, Extract Technology was acquired by USA Corporation, Carlisle Group of Companies, and became CPS Extract. However, when the company was sold to Insight Equity in 2006, it reverted to Extract Technology, a brand synonymous with quality and innovation.
While its parent company serves the US market, Extract Technology services the rest of the world. Export accounts for around 70% of business, with the company supplying isolators and downflow booths to the world’s largest pharmaceutical organisations, including Pfizer, Merck and BMS (Bristol-Myers Squibb).
Based on traditional skills
Over 90% of products are manufactured in Huddersfield. While the company provides technologically advanced products for cutting-edge industries, the manufacturing processes it employs are based on traditional engineering skills.
“Working in a region that has a strong engineering and manufacturing background, gives us access to individuals with the traditional skills that we still require today. We also have close links with local schools and operate an in-house apprentice scheme, allowing us to grow and develop our employees’ skills,” said general manager, Alan Wainwright.
Working in partnership
Extract Technology works closely with Kirklees Council to develop its staff and the business. In addition to help and advice from the Green Business Network on energy savings and sustainability issues, the company has also received access to funding through Yorkshire Forward’s Train to Gain scheme and support from UK Trade and Investment. Alan commented:
“Working with Kirklees Council has been extremely valuable. By guiding us towards support available for local businesses, we’ve received help in funding marketing initiatives and driving our business into Europe and the rest of the world.”
