Huddersfield firm helps give one of the UK's most famous tunnels a clean bill of health

Woodcock & Wilson, one of the UK's leading manufacturers of high-quality industrial fans, has completely refurbished the fans in the Tyne Tunnel within 3 months.

The firm were assigned by the tunnel's main contractors, French firm Bouygues Travaux Publics, to remove, refurbish, reinstall and re-commission the fans used to maintain the quality of air.

The fans were taken out of the tunnel, which forms part of the A19, before being driven to the company's Huddersfield factory under police escort.

Richard Wilson, the company’s service director, said: “We had a three month time-window to undertake complete refurbishment of two 14 foot diameter fans weighing several tonnes."

"I am confident our fans will do the job we engineered them to do with complete success, something our entire workforce can be very proud of," he said.

Over a mile long, the Tyne Tunnel has operated since opening in 1967 and now handles around 35,000 vehicles every day.

Woodcock & Wilson were established in 1973 and specialises in the design and manufacture of both centrifugal and axial fans for a range of applications, including heating and ventilation, air pollution control, petro-chemical, offshore and process engineering.
