Huddersfield’s Kirklees College main campus up for sale

Ahead of its move to the Waterfront development, Kirklees College’s New North Road campus has been put on the market.

The six acre site on Huddersfield’s ring road has been the College’s home since the 1960s and is being marketed by Leeds-based property consultants Dove Haigh Phillips.

The move comes as the college prepares to transfer to its £60m purpose-built campus at the Waterfront development, which will welcome over 20,000 students from September 2012.

Mike Haigh, from Dove Haigh Phillips, said: “The property occupies a commanding gateway position overlooking the town centre.

“It is rare to have such a large site on offer so close to a town centre with options for mixed-use redevelopment.”

Mr Haigh said there was no price guide for the old campus because there are a number of potential uses for the site.

“The ultimate price depends on what the purchaser wants to do,” he said. “It is a very varied site, with the majestic old Grade 2-listed hospital building, which has the same elegant columns at the front as Huddersfield Railway Station, next door to some more modern buildings.

This is a remarkable development opportunity, which should provide a major boost to the town’s economy.”

The site, which comprises of 10 linked buildings totalling 342,000sq ft, also benefits from being close to junctions 23 and 24 of the M62.

Mr Haigh: “The development opportunity has potential for a major hotel, leisure, residential and mixed business uses with established multi-access points.

“Talks have already taken place with the council’s planning department, which is very supportive of the development”.

Peter McCann, principal and chief executive of Kirklees College, said: “We are delighted to release this important development opportunity to the market in advance of the relocation to our new Waterfront Quarter campus in September 2012.”
